Ingredient Alternatives for Petroleum Jelly
Skin Care's Power Source: Ingredients
December 25, 2023Merry Christmas (or Happy Easter, you might be reading this whenever). Or Happy Hanukkah or Happy Earth Day…
Part 1 What is Natural?
When did you first become aware of “Natural” or “Organic” or that the Earth is good?People tend to make messes. Pollution and manufacturing has been around a few hundred years, but even a plain campfire adds to air pollution.
Who taught you that some food is good and other food less beneficial? When did you first find a desire to enjoy something purely because it is “natural”?
Partly, it is a generational thing. Lifestyles keep changing. Perhaps you are young or your parents were enlightened on natural things. My mother adores supplements. Her focus goes there, but not towards natural skincare ingredients (Lucky for her? she has a daughter like me to share my forte!)
Growing up, petroleum jelly was chief. If your elbows or skin or fingers cracked, the solution: Petroleum Jelly. I found it greasy and unhelpful. My skin didn’t feel good with it applied, or after it finally went away (I doubt it actually soaked into my skin.) No one explained why it wasn’t good. I didn’t like the way it made my skin feel.
My daughter was asking me just the other day about lip care… I tried to steer her clear, but she didn’t just know. (Did I fail to teach her? I know I hadn’t bought any or given it to her. But isn’t in our usual antiseptic ointment (notice here how I am avoiding the classic brands and names…it is intentional) based mostly on

To quote Zaneeta Shinn, from the Music Man, “Eee-gad!”
Here is what came up for a list of synthetic ingredients:Petroleum Jelly. ...SLS. ...Propylene Glycol. ...Stearalkonium Chloride. ...Synthetic colours and fragrances. ...Diethanolamine (DEA) ...PVP/VA Copolymer. ...Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben, and Butyl Paraben.Yes, right at the top is petroleum jelly. I rest my case!
Let us not investigate those ingredients further. But if a list like that does not make you interested in natural ingredients, what can I say more?
Personally, there was no personal major crisis for me to find my path to natural skincare. Perhaps it is the very fact that my physical body requires upkeep, but not ever convalescence. (As I edit this, I just came off the worst Christmas Vacation cold EVER...which is what you get for bragging:) My exceptionally reliable good health allows the focus to flow elsewhere.
So, as a searcher for the best skincare products, allow yourself to trust my research and use your energy toward whatever other causes press on you. Know I have the passion for this particular pursuit.
This journey focuses on the science and power of nature to heal and rejuvenate skin. The foundation, therefore, points to the ingredients. Let us look there for the answers!
